  • Understanding how each of the following are different can help us understand the motives behnd them.
    • Misinformation refers to false information that is spread without the intention to do harm.
    • Disinformation is false information that is deliberately created to be misleading or manipulative.
    • Malinformation is based on truth, then the content or context is changed to cause harm
  • Automated accounts or "bots" are still created by humans. If humans are the source of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, they can be the solution as well.

Find examples of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation online or in social media. Use the chart above (Figure 4.1) to determine what type the information is. Discuss the source or poster and the possible motivation for sharing the information. Be sure to return to the graphic organizer from the previous lesson for help.
