Teach This Lens: Motives, What We Do Next, and We're Only Human

Teach this Lens: Motives, What We Do Next, and We're Only Human (pages 48-58), Chapter 4 Recap
  • Because humans are responsible for creating and sharing information, we must question who they are, the behaviors they hope to illicit, and who benefits if we share it.
  • "Lineup" activities are helpful for people of all ages when learning how to evaluate the credibility of information. A variety of "usual suspects" appear in the lineup, helping learners identify the tools and tactics they use, their motives, and what they expect to gain.
  • The Suspect Family Tree shows the connections between suspects to better recognize the posts and information they share and know how to avoid them.
  • Because we are only human, it is important to focus on the behavior behind digital content. This means taking owership for inadvertantly sharing misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation. It also means that even honest, intelligent people can be fooled at times.

Reflecting on Your Learning

The Mug Book in Chapter 4 of the Evidence Locker includes the suspects shared in the chapter. Each suspect has additional resources to help users understand and recognize the motives and behaviors of this suspect profile. Choose one of these suspects, read the additional resources, and answer these questions in the Open Space group Professional Learning Book Study: Developing Digital Detectives. In the Discussions tab, find Question 4: The Usual Suspects.

  1. Describe the suspect you chose. What are their motives and behaviors? How do they benefit from sharing this information?
  2. How will you share this suspect with your students? What examples help them understand, recognize, and decode them in reality?
