Teach this Lens: Triggers and Putting First Things First

Teach this Lens and Putting First Things First (pages 7 -15), Chapter 1 Recap
  • Information literacy must include social and emotional learning. This helps us identify how the information makes us and others feel, and whether or not these feelings affect how we interact with the information.
  • It is key to teach young people that our reactions to information will affect how others see us. Our dispositions as good friends or listeners are reflected in how we behave when we interact with information.

Help students learn more about their emotions and how to identify and manage them with eBooks from INFOhio. This list of 22 eBooks covers social and emotional learning topics for a variety of grade levels.

Pause and Do

  • Chapter 1's Evidence Locker content includes helpful infographics (see image below) to share with students. How will you use these in the classroom?
  • Media literacy is powerful when it is integrated into core classrooms such as English, math, science, or social studies. Check out the mini-lessons in the Evidence Locker for the grade levels you work with. What content areas would be a natural fit for these? What standards might they align with?

Reflecting on Your Learning

Recognizing our triggers can help us help others. What topics or keywords cause you to react emotionally? Take a look at the CASEL Core Competencies chart on page 10 of the book (Figure 1.2).

Answer these questions on your own. Then, think of a scenario you might share with your students that models:

  • Awareness of emotional triggers
  • Examples of self-management
  • Responsible decisions
