May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The text used for reading instruction is important. Quality text meets the needs of readers and the task, develops background knowledge and vocabulary, and stretches readers with complexity to prepare them for college and career. As readers learn through the systematic and explicit instruction of structured literacy, it is important that authentic, grade-level, and content-area specific text be used for the development of language comprehension.

Books are mirrors, windows, and doors for students. Rudine Sims Bishop's popular analogy reminds us that books help students see themselves. She reminds us that,“literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience.” When students see themselves in books, it promotes a sense of belonging, which is key for safe and successful classrooms.

Share the following titles from Highlights Library with your students, to provide mirrors, windows, and doors.
